Anyone involved in math Olympiads, either in the US or across the world, needs to have a firm grounding in functional equations, as they begin to appear more frequently in these contests. This book takes a systematic and comprehensive approach to functional equations as a whole. It utilizes a highly practical path to solving these equations, including lots of problems designed to teach students how to familiarize themselves with every strategy employed, as well as to experiment in combining and manipulating different techniques. This book contains all of the important functional equations given at national and international contests in recent years.

This book is a systematic and comprehensive approach to functional equations as a whole. Unlike in other branches of competitive mathematics, there is very little theory – rather, the methods and techniques utilized in solving these equations play the most important part. For this reason, the book has taken a highly practical path, including lots of problems designed to teach students how to familiarize themselves with every strategy employed, as well as to experiment in combining and manipulating different techniques. This work contains all the important functional equations given at contests in recent years, classified by the way they are solved. It explains the reasoning behind each method, and offers advice on how to invent meaningful solutions.

Titu Andreescu, University of Texas-Dallas,  is highly involved with mathematics contests and olympiads. He was the Director of AMC (as appointed by the Mathematical Association of America), Director of MOP, Head Coach of the USA IMO Team and Chairman of the USAMO. He has also authored a large number of books on the topic of problem solving and olympiad-style mathematics including the first edition of “Putnam and Beyond” (with Razvan Gelca), “Mathematical Olympiad Treasures” and “Mathematical Olympiad Challenges” (with Razvan Gelca). Additional Springer publications include “Mathematical Bridges”, “Complex Numbers from A to …Z”, “Number Theory” and a new monograph on Pell’s Equations to be published in 2015.

Dr. Mushkarov is a full professor at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI-BAS) and a corresponding member of BAS. Currently, he is the Head of the Analysis, Geometry and Topology Department and Deputy Director of IMI-BAS. His main research interests are in the areas of Complex Analysis, Complex Differential Geometry, and Twistor theory.
Another important aspect of Oleg’s professional involvements is his work with mathematically gifted high school students. He himself benefited from the Bulgarian system of identifying mathematical talents at an early age leading to his participation in IMO’1969, Romania. Since then he has been involved in numerous activities dealing with nurturing and developing young mathematical talents.

Ph.D. Program, Mathematics, Stanford University
BA, Harvard, 2011
Moldovan IMO Deputy Leader (2009)
IMO Gold medal (2004, 2005, 2006), Silver medal (2003, 2007)
